Second step of the diorama representing the opening scene of the film The Godfather
I cut the balsa wood in different thicknesses to make the walls and the wooden panels that make up the lower part of the room.
The thicknesses I used for this phase are 6mm for the plywood walls, 1mm for the slat frames, and 2mm for the underside of the strips that make up the wooden panels. The shelves are made of 2mm thick wood while the doors are 1.5mm thick.
You may have noticed that I did everything with laser cutting.
This allows for better precision and speed than fretwork. But for those who don’t have laser cutting, it is also possible to do fretwork.
I bought the Godfather figure online on Etsy, but I still have to touch up the painting, everything still to be looked at, for now I’m focusing on the main structure which are the walls.
I couldn’t find the original wallpaper design and so with a little patience and with photoshop I managed to capture a fragment of the original wallpaper and replicate it on a larger scale. I am very satisfied with the work done because now it is practically the same as the original. I attach the images.
For the wallpaper I used light glossy paper 120g/m°.
Once the paper was printed in the right proportions I sprayed it with an airbrush with a matt varnish, being careful not to change the color: so a little varnish at a time in several passes and drying each coat immediately with a hair dryer.
There are many details in this diorama and in order to be faithful to the original scene I had to work a lot with Photoshop to extrapolate the images of the painting in which the ruins of the Greek temples and the two family paintings above the fireplace are depicted. In addition to the reproduction of the marble that covers the fireplace.
The glue I used for all this is only vinavil, but I must say that I had to insert two strips on each side of the external walls to ensure that the wood did not warp due to the humidity of the glue.
This diorama of the Godfather’s office is taking up much more of my time than I had expected. I work without any rush, I prefer to take my time to get the best possible result.
I still have to decide if the ceiling part will be in polystyrene or plywood, but there is time for that and I will update you later, in the meantime I will finish the walls and windows with the shelves then I will start furnishing the front part.
See you next step and thanks for reading the post.
