Are there any secrets to making dioramas?
Every miniaturist or diorama artist has secrets that they sometimes share through video tutorials or even posts. (It must be said that there are many people who do diorama tutorials but only to get likes or views on social media and be able to make a small income). However, I agree with this because they provide considerable help to beginners. That said, the secrets that artists learn through experience are unlikely to be revealed. It happens that sometimes some artists, if contacted by beginners, offer advice, effectively giving away their experience. When starting a diorama it is usually a new challenge and the artist is always trying to improve. The search for suitable materials, the right dye or expedients to create a small object that makes up the diorama leads to knowledge and experiences that would otherwise not be possible to have.
Are there any special techniques? Humm… I don’t think so, in fact maybe yes! Everyone uses their own technique and changes it over time, depending on the case and the experience gained. I could tell you that sometimes I have surprised myself by having created a detail almost by chance in a different way that had never been done before and which then turned out better and faster. Every artist has his own personality like everyone else and consequently it is not possible to establish a rule that works for everyone. So my personal answer is that there are artists who are not jealous of their work, and others who instead jealously guard their experiences, that’s all!
